Cycling

Cycling in Mallorca regardless of whether you are a  recreational cyclist or a cycling pro is top of the list of the best things to do on this beautiful Balearic island. Discovering the maritime landscapes and Mallorcan mountains on two wheels is a truly magnificent and enriching experience. From Alcudia there plenty of routes to choose, for example, you can go to the Natural Park of S'Albufera, the Serra de Tramuntana or along the Bay until you reach Artá.

Alcudia town

The municipality of Alcúdia is best known, apart from its wonderful beaches, for its walled historic center, a place of picturesque beauty, surrounded entirely by medieval walls, with cobbled streets that take you on a magnificent journey to discover the most iconic sites and monuments of Alcúdia which include the Church of Sant Jaume, the medieval wall with its different portals are a must-see. The old town is one of the essential things to see in Alcúdia on holiday, but if you come in July, take the opportunity to discover its history through dramatized guided tours which bring its history to life.

Parc de S’Albufera

A nature reserve with outstanding flora and fauna, S'Albufera is also a Wet Zone of International Importance, as well as a "Site of Community Importance" and a "Special Protection Zone for Birds" according to the Network Natura 2000 and the Ramsar agreement.

it has the largest wetland area of all the Balearic Islands, with a total park area of 1.646,48 hectares (mostly wetlands). There is a visitor´s center, bird hides, and observation platforms.

It is free to visit, but you must notify the park in advance and request a "permit" at reception. The opening hours of the S'Albufera Natural Park are from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. between April and September, and from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. between October and March.

Local Market

Each town in Mallorca has its own market, but Alcúdia´s is one of the most popular, due to its location among the medieval walls that surround the town.

It is held every Tuesday and Sunday between 8:00 a.m. and 13:30 p.m. there you will find a large selection of handicrafts, leather products local, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

 

The local area

is ideal for sports such as swimming, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, hiking, cycling, tennis, horse riding, and fishing; there is also a great golf course at Alcanada Golf. The beautiful town of Alcúdia, with its medieval walls, is lovely to walk around; there are plenty of shops to look at. Supermarkets and bakeries are within walking distance of the villa. There is also a 24-hour Mini market at the gas station open
After welcoming you to the house and showing you around, the interpreter will be able to advise you on local events and fiestas as well as places to visit during your stay.

The weather in Alcudia

Summer is undoubtedly one of the most recommended times to come on holiday to Alcúdia. The months of July and August, especially the latter, are the warmest of the year - the sunshine never ends!
On the other hand, if you plan to come on holiday to Mallorca later in the year, perhaps in the winter or autumn, keep in mind that it can also be a good time to stay in the Alcúdia area and do other types of “non-beach” activities such as cycling or trekking. You can take advantage of the cooler temperatures to visit the capital city of Palma with its historic monuments or one of its many art galleries, as well as enjoy sports such as cycling.

Alcudia and its History

Conquest of Mallorca by King Jaime I

The conquest of the Christian kingdoms of Mallorca was finally achieved by King Jaime I of Aragon between 1229 and 1231. The city of Madîna Mayûrqa is now known as Palma de Mallorca.

One of the first sights when arriving in Alcúdia is its impressive walls. The construction of the walls dates back to the year 1298 when King Jaime II decided that Alcúdia should become a town and be the head of the parish; this decision was purely defensive and strategic. The construction of the walls began during his reign and would end during the reign of Pedro III de Aragón in 1362.

Alcúdia is a town with a noble title. On July 18, 1523, Emperor Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman-Germanic Empire, granted in Alcúdia the title of: "Faithful City to the Emperor."

The Bay of Alcúdia is one of the most outstanding and beautiful places in this part of Mallorca; the bay encompasses the Alcúdia beach and the famous Playa de Muro beach.

The main Alcúdia Beach is a large beach of fine white sand located very close to the Port d´Alcúdia, another area that should be on your list of places to visit.
